Sofa Inspection

Sofa Inspection involves a third-party inspector visiting the manufacturing facility to conduct a pre-shipment inspection of finished sofas—such as fabric, leather, and functional models—against purchase orders, approved samples, fabric swatches, dimensional drawings, and agreed-upon AQL standards. The process entails verifying style and dimensions, material quality (fabric or leather), frame stability, padding fullness, stitching, hardware, seating comfort and functionality, and packaging integrity. Inspectors document any cosmetic or structural defects, make an overall assessment of product quality, and issue an objective third-party inspection report to enable overseas buyers to decide whether to authorize shipment.

The Importance of Sofa Inspection

Sofa Inspection4

Sofas are large upholstered furniture items involving high logistics costs. Pre-shipment inspections allow for the early detection of batch quality issues-such as fabric damage or color discrepancies, leather defects, loose frames, foam collapse, poor stitching, and hardware malfunctions-before the goods are shipped overseas. This prevents massive financial losses associated with returns, port demurrage, and tariffs upon arrival at the destination. Inspections also deter practices like fabric swapping or the use of inferior filling materials, ensuring consistency between the bulk shipment and the approved sample, thereby reducing the risk of complaints from end consumers. Furthermore, third-party inspection records and reports serve as crucial, neutral evidence should quality disputes arise between the buyer and seller.

Key inspection items

Verification against specifications and samples – Confirm that the product model, color scheme, fabric material, and dimensions match the order and approved sample; verify the shipment quantity; and ensure label and shipping mark information is accurate.

Exterior and fabric inspection– Check fabric for pulled threads, snags, stains, color inconsistencies, or damage; inspect leather surfaces for scratches, scars, cracks, or peeling; ensure stitching is straight and uniform-free of skipped stitches, missed seams, or excessive loose threads-and that seam alignments are precise.

Structure and filling inspection – Shake the sofa to test the stability of the frame, ensuring there is no looseness or abnormal noise; verify that fillings (such as foam or down) are plump and evenly distributed, with proper resilience after compression and no localized sagging; ensure sofa legs are securely installed and the unit sits level without wobbling or rocking.

Functionality and hardware testing– For standard sofas, inspect the assembly of armrests and backrests; for functional sofas, repeatedly test the extension and retraction mechanisms to ensure smooth operation without sticking; check hardware-such as legs and connectors-for rust or deformation.

Underside inspection – Check that the bottom dust cover is intact and support webbing is securely fastened; ensure no sharp wood or metal parts are exposed, eliminating the risk of scratches.

Packaging inspection – Verify that protective measures-such as EPE foam, corner protectors, and stretch wrap-are properly applied; ensure the outer carton is intact and suitable for long-distance ocean transport, preventing impact damage or fabric soiling during transit.
